Buying in Bulk on 1688: Where First-Timers Lose Money

The unit price is a trap door. The minimum quantity is the floor under it.

Read the minimum before the price

Many listings show a tempting unit price that only applies at ten or fifty pieces. At one piece the price jumps, sometimes above Taobao retail.

Check the tier table, not the headline. The tier you can actually buy at is your price.

Sample first, always

Order one piece of anything you plan to buy in tens. The sample tells you whether the batch is worth the commitment.

Sample cost is trivial next to a box of forty pieces you cannot sell or wear.

Freight behaves differently at volume

At forty pieces, volumetric weight and carton dimensions matter more than unit weight. Ask for the packed carton size, not the item size.

Bulk clothing compresses well; bulk accessories usually do not. Plan the mix accordingly.

QC at volume is sampling, not inspection

Warehouses photograph a few pieces, not forty. Ask them to open three or four at random and show you the seams.

If the sample shows inconsistency, expect the batch to be worse. Factories ship the good ones first.

FAQ

Can I mix sizes in one bulk order?

Often yes, at or above the minimum total. Confirm in the remark and check the ratio at QC.

Is bulk cheaper after shipping?

Usually yes per unit, because freight per piece falls sharply once a carton is full.

What if the batch quality drops?

Raise it at QC with photos. After shipping, your leverage is gone.
